Hi there! Loving Underlined so far, but I have a question about ownership of writing. If I were to post, say, a novel that I might want to publish a few years from now on here, would I still have all rights to it? Or would it belong to Underlined, just as all photos you post on Instagram belong to Instagram? Thank you, and I can’t wait for the future of this website!

Loving how this website is so far, but as always there are some places that there could be improvements: 1) It would be nice to be able to click on peoples profile pictures or name when they appear in comments so that you can find them easier. 2) I wish there were more color options for the generic cover pics. I love that they are just solid colors, but it would be super awesome if you had other color options that you could choose from other than just the shades of aqua. 2) I would love a way to be able to save links to the works that you are reading of others so that you can access them easier. 3) If there was some way to comment on errors or segments on peoples works (kinda like the “comment” option on a shared google doc). 4) A way to order the writings that you have so you can choose which ones are shown and which end up being hidden. 5) Lastly, figment had the option to comment on a persons profile so that you could contact them without having to comment on a specific book; this would be an awesome option

Yay, follow button is working! Another small feature that’s really helpful is being able to change the order in which writings show up in your library.

Just trying to clarify your thoughts. Do you mean the order of your stories under “my writing”?

I’m wondering, would it be too hard to organize books into novel, novella, short story, poem, flash fiction, etc, or maybe even have a button to click on when we’re creating it, so everyone would be able to know what they’re actually about to read if the author doesn’t put it into the summary? Along with a button for In Progress, Complete, On Hiatus.

I think it would be cool if, when adding to the My Bookshelf on our pages, we could add other user’s writing and it would link to their stories, so we could have those saved and not have to go in search of stories we’re reading, or waiting to get updated. Also, a notification when someone replies to a comment we post.

This is more of a suggestion than a question but, I loved groups on Figment and would really like to see them here! 🙂

Here’s a few additional suggestions other than updating the Terms of Use to be more writer friendly: 1) The comments and images that appear with comments made here should link back to the user’s page. It is unwieldy to have to type out their name if you want to see their writing or follow them. 2) A poetry genre should be added. 3) We should be able to add other users’ writings alongside the books in our libraries. 4) The libraries need to be fleshed out with more content. Most of the (well-known) books I added to the library only appear as white letters on a solid background. 5) There should be a bigger focus on the user side of Underlined. Currently it feels too much like Buzzfeed with the user content hidden away like it’s a shameful secret. 6) The giant everything works great for mobile, but everything should be more compact for users on a computer. There’s just too much scrolling involved and too little information on the screen at one time. 7) User writings should have a way to be marked ‘in progress’ or ‘complete’ so that potential readers know what they are getting into. 8) There should be a way to group multiple ‘writings’ together if they are related. Maybe have ‘Stacks’ or something that can act like playlists in order to organize book series together. 9) User’s should be able to rearrange the order the writings on their page so they can showcase their more important work first rather than just the most recent. 10) On a user’s page, the bookshelf and authors should not be given as much space as the user’s writing. They should be on the page but scaled down to take up a much smaller portion. Currently, there is too much scrolling to reach a writer’s work. Just the same, the interest should still be included, but they need to be scaled down significantly. Having the same weight for all of these confuses the actual purpose of Underlined, and when it was pitched, Underlined was meant to be a place where writers could share their work. Right now it feels like that’s the lowest priority for Underlined. 11) There should be something that indicated the length of a writing. If word counts are not an option, a simple way for users to mark their writing as short (35K) should suffice. 12) User’s should be able to review both books and other users’ writings on a 5 point scale like Goodreads (if it is marked ‘complete’). User’s should also be able to opt each piece of writing out of the rating system if desired. 13) A user dashboard should be created to manage notifications, comments, writings, and analytics simply and easily. 14) Users should be notified when someone replies to their comment.

I was thinking that there could be a status option. Groups could work too. Maybe a way to see who’s online. Badges would be a great motivation too. Maybe something for those of us who do Nanowrimo and CampNanowrimo.

It doesn’t work on Google Chrome, so try a different browser. Go to your profile page and you should see a little pen in the corner of your profile picture. Hope this helps!
