Trend Alert: Unicorn EVERYTHING!

Unicorns have basically taken over our planet, and we’re not mad about it.

Scroll through your Instagram feed, head to your local Starbucks, or check out your favorite celeb’s Snapchat and BAM!, there they are in all their rainbow-colored, sparkly unicorn glory. Naturally, the unicorn look makes for killer social media posts. It’s bright. It’s fun. But how did this trend come to be—and last—in our world of ever-changing social media trends?

We can thank Adeline Waugh, a Miami-based blogger and food stylist, who inadvertently started the unicorn food trend back in June 2016.

Waugh struck social media gold by experimenting with natural dyes for her health and wellness blog, Vibrant and Pure. She wanted to make healthy food more fun, so she decided that adding pops of color would do the trick. Naturally, she started adding beet juice to all her food creations. Yes, you read that correctly. We have beets to thank for giving us unicorns!

According to Waugh, though, she never intended to start a trend and credits her followers for comparing her creations to the magical creature.

“I posted it, and all my followers started saying it looked like a unicorn, so I said you’re right, and I started calling it that too,” Waugh told The New York Times. “Then all of a sudden all these people were making it and tagging it, and now the unicorn thing has gotten just insane.”

We couldn’t agree more! In the past year, we’ve seen unicorn-inspired food, clothing, hair dye, and even body glitter, advertised on Instagram as “unicorn snot.” (Yes, seriously.) Everyone from up-and-coming fashion bloggers to mega companies like Starbucks seem to have dipped their toes in the unicorn pool—or shall we say snot?!

It doesn’t seem like this craze is slowing down anytime soon, so here’s a look at some of our favorite unicorn-related items to get you through the rest of 2017 on trend. Horns up, everyone!
