Kara Thomas writes about some seriously scary stuff, especially in her latest novel Little Monsters, which is basically like Pretty Little Liars, but on a whole new level of creepy.
We asked Kara where she gets all her dark and scary ideas and this is what she told us . . .
I’m a big true crime fan, and I listen to a lot of podcasts and read a lot of true crime books. But, my latest obsession is binge-watching all of these new true crime and mystery shows that are coming out. Here are just a few favorites that have influenced my writing and given me ideas for stories:

1. Beware the Slenderman
The first show that has really influenced my writing is a documentary called Beware the Slenderman on HBO. It’s about this crime that occurred in Wisconsin where two twelve-year-old girls stabbed their friend because the fictional character “Slenderman” told them to. I’m really fascinated by the whole urban legend documentary thing, especially something as creepy as the idea of Slenderman.

2. Stranger Things
The second show is Stranger Things on Netflix. I’m obsessed with it! I love all the mystery behind it and all the different characters—the adults, kids, and the teenagers. I think it’s almost like a really cool YA novel with Jonathan and Nancy’s storylines. Even though there is a paranormal element in this show, I’ve always loved weird urban legend stories—there’s always something lurking beneath the surface.

3. The Killing Season
The third show I’m obsessed with is The Killing Season on A&E. It’s about a case that’s really interesting to me personally because I live on Long Island and the show starts with the unsolved case of the Long Island Serial Killer. The story is that five women were discovered on a beach on Long Island. They’d been kidnapped and murdered and more than six years later, the police still have no idea who did it. The Killing Season follows two documentary filmmakers who are trying to solve the case. They travel not just to Long Island, but to all these really creepy places where the police found bodies. They think the same person committed all the murders, but they still don’t know who he is.
