The Commands of the Verboten

By @Grallingbo

“Would you stop swinging your mace in my direction, please? You’re going to smash my head in if you keep that up!”

The man froze mid-swing, his gleaming sable mace held high above his head. His eyes scanned the other man below him, a confused look beginning to appear on his face as he slowly brought his weapon down.

“I summoned you,” Levi explained, raising his hands in defense.

Levi hoped this man that he summoned was a demon; there’d be hell to pay if the Lethe found out he summoned a foreign creature. Levi found it even more unfortunate that he found the man attractive. That was yet another forbidden detail in the Verboten; falling in love with your services.

The man let his arms fall to his sides as he tilted his head to the left, that confused expression still plastered on his face. This man was tall and fitted with knight’s garb, covered from the neck down in black and gray armor. Before Levi found out anything else about this man, he had to know one thing first.

“Who are you?” Levi asked.

“Michael Zacharias,” came the response mere seconds after Levi’s inquiry. The man, Michael, put his free hand over his chest. “I hail from Kingdom Stermall.”

Levi slowly pointed at Michael. “What race?” was his second question.

Michael narrowed his eyes as if expecting Levi to answer that for himself. “My race?” he questioned, more confused than before. “I’m Gargoyle.” Uncertainty plagued his tone as he added, “I’m sure I’ve been summoned on the right planet. The same planet I was just on but a few minutes ago.” He began to survey their surroundings after he spoke.

Planet–okay, just… could you just go back to where you came from? Nothing against you, it’s just that I’ll get crucified back at the academy if they know I summoned a Gargoyle,” Levi said.

“But Sir, I can’t go back,” Michael argued. “I don’t know how.”

“Firstly, it’s Levi. Call me Levi. Secondly, what do you mean you don’t know how?” Levi was yelling at this point.

Michael’s face scrunched up, all sense of confusion leaving his expression. He seemed flustered now, almost embarrassed. “I’m sorry, S–Levi.” Michael shook his head. “I’m sorry Levi. I wasn’t taught how to go back when my summoner doesn’t want me. I don’t think they expected it to happen at all. Services can be of use in many ways, so they wouldn’t expect someone to not want that privilege. Right?”

Levi sighed. “Right, right…”

It was silent between them for a moment. The tension in the air was unbearable, but Levi was so overwhelmed he couldn’t find the right words to say. Michael decided to break the quiet first.

“What will we do now, Levi?”
