Chapter 1

I’ve always loved letters. The aesthetic of it all mostly. The soft folds of paper, the inky swirls of letters; it gives one a sense of peace, of simplicity. As much as I like it, I don’t get to write very often. Only to my friend who lives a couple states over. It’s a way to remember to keep in touch. Distance comes with many untalked about restraints. It brings out all of our little flaws the get hidden or subdued in importance through intimacy. Intimacy can hide a lot. All the feelings of frustration and being unheard completely forgotten through a deliberate caress or a quick ****. It makes you feel wanted. Being wanted can make a lot forgivable. Distance rips away that veil and gnaws any relationship down to the skin and bone of words. And the blunt force of words without the cushioning of presence is its own different type of pain. It makes everything raw. It’s nothing but you and them and words. That’s how you see people for who they really are. That’s not always bad though. Seeing someone for who they are leaves the darkest parts of one to be revealed but also allows for the best parts of one to shine through. It shows effort, to struggle through the awkwardness of absence, to remain consistent in pursuits of keeping in touch, it proves they really do care about you. That could make almost any blunt damage done from someone seem like nothing in the face of being able to see who your real friends are. I guess what I am rambling is that words can be threatening. Always threatening to expose us. Always lingering when we’re finished with them. Words can be very, very powerful.
