Caused by a Car

Never See You Again

Corbin grabbed his bags and turned to me. “You remember that day? In the hospital?” He asked. “Which one?” He smiles a little. “When… I said I didn’t think we could still be friends?” he continues, placing his words carefully. “Yeah, of course. The second worst day of my life,” I pause. “why? You changed your mind… right? We’re friends?” Corbin looks away. “No,” He responded eventually. “That’s why… I’m not coming back.” He sits down and keeps talking. “Years, Ava. Gone. Because of a machine… a vehicle.” Anger was in hiding deep in his voice. But not anger towards me. Towards… himself? “Corbin, don’t blame yourself,” I murmured. “I don’t. I blame that stupid person driving the car.” I shake my head. “No, blame me. Or else,” I say. He snorts and looks up. “Or else what? Ava, it’s not your fault… you have to know that.” The sound of a car horn floats through the open window. He opens the door and starts heading downstairs. I follow him outside, holding his bags. I hand them to him as he climbs in the car. “Thanks,” He says shutting the door. As the car starts moving he lifts his hand in a wave. “It’s not yours fault, either.” I said as I turned, wiping my face.

I threw myself on my bed and burst into tears. “It’s not fair,” I sob as mom walks in. “What isn’t? It’s not fair he gets to lead a successful life?” I crossed my arms. “I didn’t say that.” She sits down. “I know,” she said. “I know it’s hard, and I know you wish you could run down the road, and stop their car. I know this is difficult for you.” She smiles. “On a good note, Emma just called, she told us,” She pauses. “It’s less likely.” I grinned. “What’s the percentage?” Mom smiles again. “Zero.”
