I Wish I'd Come

Corbin was sitting on the chair next to the bed when I woke up. “Ava,” he said looking up. “You’re back! It’s been weeks.” He nodded and sighed, his breath shaky. “Ava, I came to say goodbye.” I frowned and sat up, the needle in my arm tugging against my skin. “Why? Where are you going?” He looked away. “We’re nineteen, and I’m going to college.” My face started heating up. Everyone else was getting on with their lives, while I was stuck in a small, bright loud, stuffy room. It wasn’t fair. I swallowed hard. “Good luck,” I said finally. “I’m happy for you.” Corbin nodded and half-smiled. “Yeah, I’m happy for me too,” he answered. “But, I hope you catch up quickly,” he added. “I hope you can still lead a successful life.” I stood up, my legs shaky. “How far are you going?” Corbin didn’t answer. “Corbin.” He didn’t meet my eyes, and I tried to remember anything that would keep him from going. “Far,” he replied. “Too far.” I found myself grabbing his face, forcing him too look at me. “You’ll come back, right?” He nodded. “Definitely… after I’m done with college.” I dropped my arms. “But, that’s…” He shook his head and looked down. “I know, Ava. Four years.” I crossed my arms and sat down. “If we’re lucky.” The door opened. “Ava!? What are you doing? You need rest! Corbin, out.” Corbin looked up, startling the nurse (Emma) due to his pink tear stained face. “Okay,” She said. “A few more minutes. Ava, you need rest kick him out if need be.” she smiled and shut the door. “If we’re lucky,” Corbin repeated. “But it’s okay, you’ll be okay.” I looked at my hands. “Will you?” Corbin smiled. “I’ll be fine, Ava. You’re the one who was in a coma worry about yourself, not me.” I grinned and looked up. “Okay mom!” Corbin allowed himself to smile. “I’ll see you in a few years,” He said standing up, as the door opened. “Before you go,” Emma said stepping back into the room with my parents and Jake. “I have bad news.” My parents were crying, and Jake’s face was red. Corbin’s face went pale. “I’m so, so, so sorry to tell you this,” Emma continued. “Just tell her,” Jake said looking up. “If Ava is parted with anyone for more than five years, she’ll most likely have trouble remembering them.” Corbin looked at me, his face even whiter. “But- I’m leaving, for at least four years!” He exclaimed. “I’m sorry, just try to come back before the five year mark. It may be more years, maybe less. And, this isn’t definite. Seventy/thirty chance.” Corbin sat down, not looking at anyone. “Alright.” He stood up and pushed past my parents. “But,” Emma said. “On a good note, she’ll be released in a week if we don’t come across any bumps.” Jake looked up, his face returning to it’s normal color. “Will Corbin have left by then?” I asked. “Sweetie, he’s leaving tomorrow,” My dad answered, and Jake disappeared.
