You keep checking your phone hoping that someone would reply. You feel your phone vibrate in your back pocket and your heart begins to race with excitement. Your fingers fumble with your phone as you try to open the text. You see that it wasn’t a text but a notification from the security app you installed a few weeks ago. You installed the app because your brother Oliver thought you would be safer with it. There’s also been disappearances in town. Since it’s a small town everyone knows everybody. Your neighbors are an elderly couple. They are very nice people and made you feel like family since the nearest family you have is in the next state. You feel a shiver run down your body, but you brush it off hoping that your just cold. You check the footage, and your heart skips a beat. There’s a figure in your backyard. For a second, you’re in panic. Then your conscious comes and then you start calming down. You didn’t notice you were breathing that hard until you take a moment and try to calm yourself. It’s probably your neighbor James. The doubt starts creeping from the back of your mind. Ever since you were a kid you’ve dealt with anxiety and depression, and you’ve always been told that your coping skills would help. So ever since you were eight years old you have been playing the piano. You go to your music room but first you make sure you lock all the doors and windows just in case your neighbor wasn’t looking for his cat. You go to your music room and once you sit down all these thoughts flow through your head. Calm down Emma you think to yourself. You got this. As soon as you touch the keys your worries go away. You feel familiarity as you play. Not even sure what song you’re playing you keep on. The melody fills the empty house and your lost in the sound. As you finish you end with a note that puts chills down your spine. It was beautiful. The faint sound of clapping filled the halls. You stand up quickly and try to make sense of what just happened. Maybe it was all in your imagination. You don’t care if it was in your imagination, you quickly stand up and walk out of the house. You have seen to many scary movies to just stay in the house that you thought you were alone in. You grab the house keys on the way out and walk through the rain. You feel the icy rain drip down you’re back. You knock on your neighbor’s door. No answer. You start to panic and that’s when the door opens. You see a lovely old lady standing in the doorway. She ushers you in to keep you out of the cold. “Hi Mrs. Anderson, sorry for bothering you but I just don’t feel safe in my house right now.” you uttered. “Oh, deary don’t worry about it come in.” Mrs. Anderson announced. As you come into the bright house you smell cookies and feel the warmth of the oven as you pass the kitchen into the living room. “Emma what a nice surprise.” Mr. Anderson expressed. “Have you seen Ava?” Mr. Anderson asked. “We have been looking for her all day, but we haven’t seen her.” I usually see Ava in the back of my house trying to catch the lizards but today she was nowhere to be seen. “No, I haven’t Mr. Anderson but I bet shell turn up sooner or later” you say relieved that you were out of the house. Suddenly there was a loud thump. All you see is red liquid sliding down the glass screen door. The realization hits you like a bullet. It’s blood. You examine the room and look for the nearest exit. “Now what the heck was that” Mr. Anderson said in shock. He opened the door and laying on the floor was Ava. She had been stabbed to death. All her blood was matted in her fur. “CLOSE THE DOOR” you yell. Mr. Anderson just started at his poor cat. Suddenly there was a bang and then the lights went out. It happened so fast you didn’t know what had happened until it was over. A tall figure came up to the glass screen door and grabbed Mr. Anderson. Before Mrs. Anderson and I could react, he was gone. You tell Mrs. Anderson to run, and you follow her out the door. She was crying hysterically but you didn’t know what to do. You only knew that you needed to get out of there. With or without her. You both run and as soon as you get out into the rain you run to the car. Mrs. Anderson slipped and fell and there was a loud crack. She screamed in pain. You look back at her you aren’t sure whether you should go back for her or not. You see the figure. It has something shiny in its hand. You run back picking her up and putting her on your shoulder. All her weight leans toward you. You feel yourself go down. The rain is blurring your vision, but you can tell that it is getting closer. You feel your arm give out and it feels like you’ve been hit with a bat. You check your arm and theirs a knife wedged in between. You hear it taking Mrs. Anderson and you realize there is nothing you can do about it. You take out the knife crying in pain. Nobody must have heard because of how loud the rain was pounding on the ground. You run towards your car going at full speed. You reach for the handle, but the doors locked. You have no choice but to bolt inside the house. You grab your keys off the kitchen counter and run back to the front door pray that he hasn’t finished Mrs. Anderson off. Not that she could save her but that you had more time to escape. It was standing in the front door laughing you realize it’s a man because of how deep his voice is. He has a mask over his face so you’re not sure if it is a man. He has a knife in his right hand, and he takes a step towards you. You turn around and run out the back door. You go to the shed and grab the nearest tool it’s a hoe. You turn around your arm aching from where the knife was before. He comes closer and you take a swing on him, and you miss. He gets closer and you take another. This time you make contact. He falls back and you realize this is your chance to escape. You see a neighbor and you yell at him to call the police. Bad mistake. You look at the man with knife and he punches you in the stomach. You fall back your world is blurry. You feel the rain pounding your face as you gasp for air. Then suddenly your sight goes dark. You feel cool dirt rubbing against your back You slowly open your eyes and realize your being dragged. You don’t know whether you should scream for help. You don’t recognize your surroundings, but you hear the faint sound of police sirens. You have a flutter of hope. You think that maybe you’ll be okay but that’s when the screaming started. You find out quickly that the screaming wasn’t yours but another girl. You watch as the man comes closer to her with a knife. Her pleading made you want to scream. He took the knife to her heart but then you heard a voice telling them to stop. It was you begging the man to stop. “Oh, so your awake I guess now the real fun can begin.” the man smirked. You start crawling backwards as the man approaches. You feel the ground for anything that can be useful to you. You feel a rock. You swing with full force, and he screams in pain. You quickly stand up. You see the girl she is taller than you and instead of black hair she has brown wavy hair. You cut her ties and she hugs you like you were family. “Congratulations Emma!” the woman beamed. You stumble back confused. You’re not going to even ask her how she knows your name that was the least of your worries. You latch onto her wrist and pull her along with you as soon as you were going to start running you bump into the tall man. You fall back in shock. This is it you thought this is how you were going to die. Instead of killing you the man takes off his mask. Your taken a back because the man that’s trying to kill you is your own brother. You feel your heart break your whole world falls. Her best friend was trying to kill her. The only person you trusted is against you. “I can explain Emma.” Oliver smiled. You stare at him in disbelief the tears flowing down your cheeks. “Emma, we had to, we needed to see if you were ready or not.” he explained. You don’t hear him though your lost in your memories. Was this really the brother that picked you up after you fell off your bike? “Now we know that you’re ready” he praised. He embraced her in a hug, and you are not sure if you should hug him back. You embraced him back. Crying into his chest you ask him why. “Well Emma we needed to know if you were ready to come with us to the new world.” he explained. “What new world?” you question suddenly angry that your brother had done this. The shock had worn off. He turns around to the young woman and she nods. “This new world.” he grinned. That’s when he revealed an opening that was covered with vines. There was nothing. They both started smiling and telling you to go in. You didn’t know what to do and your first instinct was to run. You bolt out the entrance of the cave and you realize you’re in the forest. You sense your brother trailing right behind you. You trip over a rock and go flying. Your brother grabs your ankle and begins pulling you. The woman picks up a large rock almost tipping over. She brings it up above your head and comes down on you. That’s the last thing you remember before you wake up in a hospital bed with your arms handcuffed to the bed. Your screams fill the halls and that’s all you remember before you black out.
