He’s coming, whispered Teller
Coming to get you
He will love you with all his heart
He just won’t let you leave him
Because you’re his…
For all eternity!!
Teller’s words echoed in my head, as I ran out and bolted towards the train station.
He’s coming, child
He’s coming to take you away
Breathe, Mel. Everything is fine, it’s probably just a prank.
He will respect you
He will love you
Shaking my head, I get on the last train for the night. It’s a joke, nothing is going to happen.
Finally making it to my stop, I run back to the apartment complex trying not to get hit by these crazy taxi drivers.
Slamming the door when I got in, I hear Rocky barking and a groan to my left and see mom getting up from the couch.
“Melody Anna-marie Johnson, why are you late?” Mom yelled. There were worry and anger evident in her voice.
He’ll never let you go, dear.
“Where have you been? Why didn’t you call or at least text one of us?!” She asks, waiting for a response. “DeDe? Are you okay? You look so pale.’
“Huh? Oh yeah, mom.” I ran my fingers through my hair. “I’m really sorry for being late.”
“What happen DeDe? You looked like you’ve seen a ghost.”
“I’m fine mom, really. Just Kate and I went to a horror movie this time and then when we were on the train we almost got mugged.”
“What?! Oh my goodness! Rick! Rick, get out here!” She yells for Dad as she checks to see if I’m injured.
Because you’re his…
Dad comes in with his service gun at the ready. Mom groans. “Would you put that away! Melody’s here!”
“Oh! Well, young lady, why the hell are you coming in all hours of the night?! Do you know the dangers out there at this time?!”
“And she almost got mugged!”
Dad creases his nose in frustration and sighs. “Alright it’s late, you have school tomorrow, glad you’re finally home snuggle-bug.”
Mom sighed as Dad heads back with Rocky behind him. “You’re grounded for a week you understand? No phone or hanging out with Kate. Now dinner is on the table so heat it up and eat all of it, then please go to bed.”
For all eternity
I sighed as Mom heads to bed, while I slowly walk past the couch towards the dining table. Looking to see that it’s meatloaf night again. Shaking my head, I picked the plate and head to the kitchen to sadly heat up my dinner, I don’t want it, but mom would freak if she sees it still on the table.
After eating, I went to my room, too tired to take my shower and fell into a deep sleep. Hearing soft creaks coming from the hallway, I sat up looking at the door, pulling my blanket closer to me.
Wait! No, the fortune has to be a lie! Looking towards the alarm clock on my nightstand, the soft glowing number read midnight.
Taking deep breaths, I slowly get up, grabbing my bat from the floor creeping towards my door listening for more footsteps. Seeing a figure’s shadow outside my door, I grip my bat tighter, preparing for the worst, hearing whimpering and scratching on my door.
Letting out a sigh of relief, I open the door seeing Rocky “You scared me, you know?” I say, petting him, while he licks my hand. “Let’s go to bed, huh?” I closed my door, getting back under the covers, while Rocky lays down next to me, and slowly try to fall back asleep.
Waking up to the sound of crunching, I feel myself being carried.
“We have 10 more hours left, so I suggest getting some sleep, amore.” A husky voice says, in a gentle deep tone.
Definitely does not sound like Dad! I have to get out of here!
“Can you please stop squirming amore, I will drop you and you’re annoying me.”
After being dropped on the ground, I try to get up but realized I can’t see or move.
**** it! He tied my hands and legs together! I still have to try though.
“Sweetheart, can you please stop this, you’re not going to get very far you know?”
I continue to crawl like worm hoping I’m far.
He groans. “Alright, darling I can’t keep watching you look like a weird worm.” I feel him the back of my shirt.
“No one can hear you. We’re too deep in the woods.” He puts me on his shoulder and continues walking.
I continue screaming and struggling hoping somebody will save me.
“Okay that’s enough, you’re irritating me.” He takes me off his shoulder, slams me hard on the ground, and punches me.
Feeling my eyes start to slowly close, I’m back at Teller’s shop, wishing at least one of my friends came with me.
I remember that day, the most humid Thursday in Bronx, New York.
