Sweet as Candy: A Novel in Verse

By @Madison

After she finishes her breakfast

Izzy enters the address I had read over so many times

Into her GPS

And drives me to the clinic.

When we get there

She stares at me

Eyes still full of worry.

“Are you sure you’ll be okay?” she asks.

“I’ll be fine.”

I fling the door open

Hopping out onto the sidewalk.

I turn around

Only to be greeted by Izzy’s stern, motherly glare.

I know by the look in her eye that she’s this close to saying something.

Though she’s yet to open her mouth

I know that I’ll soon be faced with an ‘are you sure about this?’

I prepare myself

Before giving her a reply.

She seems to snap out of whatever trance she was in.

She shakes her head before cranking uo the engine again.

“Nothing,” she says.

“Just… call me if you need anything, okay?”

“Will do.”

I awkwardly drag one of my sneakers against the concrete

Watching her stare out the windshield

Jaw set

Eyes blank.

Apparently, she figured an ‘are you sure’

Would be too pushy.

Though I’m pretty sure I agree with this staatement

I’m a bit surprised

At the fact that I wouldn’t have a definitive answer to that question.

Izzy gives me one last goodbye

Before driving away.

Suddenly feeling as if my legs are made of lead

I walk toward the doorway

All the while wondering to myself

If I really am sure.
