Sweet as Candy: A Novel in Verse

Certainty

When I get back home, I go straight to the bathroom.

Having chugged my soda on the ride over

The process should be fairly quick

Though I know it will be nowhere near painless.

I take the test strip out of its package

Examine the instructions thoroughly.

Once I’ve completed the process

I wait

Idly staring at the little white stick in front of me

Waiting for it to announce my fate.

A while later

The result becomes clear.

I pick the strip up

Stare at it

Look back at the instruction for reference.

Oh god.
