The time was 3:34 A.M, on July 2nd, 2037. Temperature, 78 degrees Fahrenheit. Wind going northeast at 12 mph. Variable humidity of 45%. I remember all of this, even though it was five years ago.
You might be wondering why all of this seemingly useless information is so clearly kept in my mind. This is because that was when my life changed completely.
It seemed like a regular day. I had spent the day messing around and biking around, but that night something strange happened. I was awoken at 3:34 A.M, at least according to my alarm clock. Some kind of tapping was coming from the windows. It took a second for me to realize what to do, due to it being 3:34 A.M. I brushed away my curtains and saw nothing. The tapping then resumed immediately as I put the curtains back. Thinking that it was all just a figment of my tiredness, I went back to sleep.
When I woke up, I had a splitting headache. I also felt extremely hot and breathless, and I also felt sick to my stomach. I thought to myself, jokingly, that it felt like a weaponized strain of the flu.
The next day seemed normal. The memory of what had occured the day before was gone from my mind, but not for long. Not wanting to waste the day, I decided to walk around town. After about half an hour of walking, I decided to head towards a small convenience store a few minutes away. As I walked into the store, something strange happened. When I entered the store, all I could see was just blinding white. As if I was playing a game and the inside of the store hadn’t been rendered for some reason. I also felt some kind of throbbing pain in my head, which disappeared when I walked out of the ‘store’.
After walking in and out of the store a few times, I started hearing some kind of voice in my head. I couldn’t quite make out what it was saying, and it brought me to the realization that I was going insane.
As the voice became louder and louder, I could almost understand what it was saying. But it wasn’t speaking in english. It was some garbled tone that almost had some meaning to me, somehow. Soon, the noise became excruciatingly loud. I felt as if my brain was about to explode. As the noise became all I could see, feel, hear, think, and even taste and smell, the world disappeared.
After what felt like hundreds of years, something appeared out of the nothingness that I was experiencing. It looked like a die. I reached out for it through habit, and when I got close to it it seemed to become that much farther. After a few attempts, the die somehow got thrown up by itself. When it landed, the number it chose was 2. As quickly as my world disappeared, it came back.
