Thump, thump. Thump, thump. Meldina’s great big eyes, the size of dinner plates, blinked open. She got up, stretched her wings, and lumbered through her cave to see what exactly was of such importance to keep her from her beauty sleep.
She wandered outside to see a knight hammering a sign in the ground. Her shadow loomed over him, causing him to slowly turn around, his knees quaking in fear.
“May I help you?” inquired Meldina, stretching her wings.
“No, no,” squeaked the knight. “I’m just here to put up this notice, by direct order of King Ekalf.” His chest puffed out as if that was a great accomplishment, but Meldina just snorted in disgust. She knew about King Ekalf and his hatred towards dragonkind.
“What does he want now?” she wondered aloud, bending down to investigate the sign.

“Direct punishment? Hmmph!” snorted Meldina. “King Ekalf wouldn’t dare try to ‘punish’ a dragon!” She stared off into the distance, wondering if there was anything she could do. “Aha! I’ve got it!” She looked around for the knight that had put the sign up but found him trying to creep behind a bolder. With a great flap of her wings, Meldina flew over and caught his tunic in her huge white teeth. She flew back to her cave opening and spit him out. “Phah! I’ve forgotten how bad knight tasted!”
“Wha-wha-what? I’m sorry, what did you just say? Do I taste bad?” stammered the knight. “I don’t want to hurt you, O Great Dragon! I’m just here on orders from King Ekalf! If i didn’t come, I’d be suspended from the squadron if i didnt!” He wimpered and looked up at Meldina with his eyes wide open.
