King of the World

By @Briannag288

Invitation: Part Two

“Um…what?” Queen Kate asked. Her mask displayed a question mark.

“Sorry for dropping this news off so suddenly. However, I mean what I said. After tonight’s game, King of the World will be postponed for one week. During that week, registrations will be opened for new participants. Once one hundred spots are filled, the competition will continue. An entrance fee of one hundred credits will be required. A small price to pay for such an incredible opportunity.”

“Holy ****, Jazzy. Do you know what this means?”

“That you can fangirl over 233 for a bit longer?”

“No, well maybe? It means you can sign up!”

“Why would I do that?” Jasper asked.

“Um, because you’re broke? Because you live in this sad excuse for an apartment. Because you barely make anything at the **** job you have.”

“Not everyone can live in a nicer Zone. Or can have a job as an influencer. How’s that even a job? Besides, you’re right. I am broke. I can’t even afford the entrance fee. What makes you think I could even have a chance to be King?”

“Just because I live in Zone 6 doesn’t mean I’m rolling in it. I’m just really good at my job. Digging for dirt on people is very lucrative.” She sighed. “How about I pay your fee? I’ll be like your personal sponsor,” Amber smiled. “Plus, I can bet on you. Cheer for you! That’s what I meant.”

“I heard the betrayal. Don’t deny it.”

“You could do it. You’re smart, strong, fast, and clever. You may be part lazy bum, but you can kick some serious ass when you need to. Just…at least think about it. Please, Jazzy?”

“You just want to use me for my body. Come on, Amber. Say more good stuff about me.”

Amber rolled her eyes. “Nevermind, you’re mostly a lazy bum. At least fifty percent.”

“Thank you,” Jasper laughed. He thought for a moment. “Do you really think I’d have a chance?”

“Honestly? Yeah. Didn’t you say you always wanted to go to Zone 10? Or Island land? I still don’t know why you call it that.”

“A big island with most of it covered by a theme park. Who wouldn’t like that? Ronda and I always wanted to go. I heard it’s beautiful.”

“Geez, if only there were a way for you to afford some tickets to go with her. That’d make one hell of a memory. Oh well…”

“Well, you heard it here first, everyone! King has declared an extension for the competition. Look out for updates in the upcoming week. Alright! It’s finally time to announce tonight’s game. Drum roll, please? Four corners! You all remember that game, right? A person stands in the middle while others run to a corner of the room. If your corner gets called, you’re out. This will go on until we have one hundred left. The game will start in five minutes. Please enter a room code into your phone with the app. The channel will be toned to the participant you want to follow. If you don’t select something, then you will be put into a random lobby. Okay, everyone, let’s count it down!” Queen Kate said.

“Good luck, everyone. I look forward to a good show,” King said as the screen darkened and the counter appeared.

“Well, I’m gonna call Ronda real quick,” Jasper said, walking towards the front door. “Yell when it starts.”

“On it,” Amber said.

Jasper closed the door behind him as he dialed Ronda’s number. He didn’t know why he felt nervous to talk to her. He watched the street below as he waited. People were walking around, shuffling from place to place. The air had a fresher hint of garbage to it. Slight improvement. He hated that Amber was right. He did live in a sorry excuse for an apartment, his job did suck, he didn’t get paid much, and he was barely getting by. “I’m such a loser,” Jasper said to himself.

“Jasper?” Ronda asked. “What’s up?”

“H-Hey, Ronny. What’s up?”

“You called me, dummy.”

“Right, sorry. Are you watching the King of the World thing? Amber’s making me.”

“Shoot! I almost forgot. Thanks for reminding me. I’m pulling up the app now. Isn’t it kind of exciting? I’m not super into it like Amber, but it’s still something to look forward to.”

“I guess. Hey, um, hypothetically, what would you think if I played?”

“You’re joking, right?” Ronda asked while laughing her head off. “I thought you said you didn’t like it.”

“You don’t have to laugh. I was just asking.”

“Oh, don’t be like that. I just thought it was funny because you talked all that **** about it being lame, and now you’re talking like this. Wait,” Ronda said. “Don’t tell me…”

“I guess you found out?” Jasper asked, sitting down on the stairs.

“They opened it up? Seriously? Jasper, you’re seriously thinking about joining, aren’t you?”

“Shut up, dummy. I mean, you know I’d support you. I say go for it. If you want to.”

“Do I really want to? That money would be amazing, but can I make it that far? Even Ronda’s cool with it,” Jasper thought.

“Hey, you there?” Ronda asked.

“Sorry, I was off in space. Bad reception.”

“It’s a wonder how you made it out of high school,” Ronda laughed. “If you want, I could chip in for the fee. At least it’s cheaper than the previous years.”

“How the **** is that cheap?!” Jasper thought. “Yeah. Don’t sweat it. Amber said she’d cover it.”

“So…you’re doing it?” Ronda asked.

Jasper looked up and saw Amber tapping on the window. He waved at her, and she disappeared. “I guess I am,” Jasper sighed. “I’ll call you later, okay? The game’s about to start. Love you.”

“Love you more,” Ronda said, disconnecting.

“How the hell did I get suckered into this? Heh, maybe I should lose on purpose. That’ll show Amber. Teach her to bet on me,” Jasper said, shaking his head. “King Jasper, huh? That doesn’t sound too bad.”
