Home Again

I had just finished my new home tucked inside the hollow of a loyal oak tree. A bed of soft, silky deer-skin lay in a pile in the corner, fit for a fourteen-year-old girl to doze off in. I had also scraped out a few square metres, just to make sure I had enough space, and in the other corner there was a little area for cooking in. A bundle of dry twigs, sticks and fresh leaves lay in that area, and I had carved out some holes in the tree trunk so the sunlight could come in and the smoke from the fires could be released. I was pretty happy with my new home so far. All I needed was a living space – a bed and a kitchen. The rest I could manage on my own.

It was only my seventh morning up in the mountains. Actually – it was only my fifth being all alone on the mountains. Our class had hiked up here for hours and set up our tents for a two-night camping trip, and when we were about to leave, I had gotten left behind in the scorching heat and the bustling nature! But I was alright. From the guides, we had learnt many life skills to survive up here, and so far, they had come in extremely handy, alright!

I knew how to catch fish with only a few twigs and a grub, and cook it atop a fire, too. I also knew how to hunt down animals – but I had self-taught myself that.
