Heart in a Flask

By @SunflowerClock

Always

She would sit by the window

with curtains that dance between sunbeams, all black

and wait for the man that she truly loved so..

though he’d never come back

She would wake to the new sun

and spread herself on the bed in a stretch

and feel beside her, it’s cold and more cold

with pain that lingered in a whisper

She would move back to her mother’s old house

Afraid of the scent of the beach near her own

The one where she held hands with a man

Who has yet to come back home

She would think, but not reflect

Hear, but never listen

See, but be blind

to the memories that plague her soul

She would cry into consoling arms of her mother

who’s face was weathered by life and its troubles and grace

a soft sadness resting on her features

for her child had reached a bitter fate but,

But she would get her bearings together

a braveness engraved in her being,

in a white dress, and a suitcase,

and she’d find her way back home with that feeling
