“Troy, look out!” I shouted to my teammate as I took aim and shot a Thrall in the head behind him. I’ve gotten far better with with my aim since I was revived by my ghost and honestly, if it wasn’t for Troy, I wouldn’t be this far right now, I’m very thankful I have him on my fireteam.
Troy let out a sigh of relief, “thanks.” Glancing around the cave we were in, he checked to make sure there were no more Hive. “Time to move on, we’ve gotta get to the end of this cave and find that cache box.”
I followed Troy deeper into the cavern, holding my Sunshot ready, I couldn’t be a dead weight this time and I didn’t want to be. I needed to be better. We rounded a corner and came out into another open clearing, there were Hive everywhere and the boss was among them. After surveying the area, it didn’t take us long to finish them all off, being as we are in the top rankings of fireteams though we’re only two.
Troy and I continued doing odd jobs on Nessus for Cayde, once we were finally beat, we headed back to the Tower. Arriving at the tower, I felt so relieved, after being out in that chaos it was nice to relax once in a while. We reported back to Cayde, letting him know what we had done and he told us Zavala wanted to see us. I looked at Troy and Cayde, Troy shared my same quizzical face, but Cayde just shrugged.
“Who knows, this is Zavala we’re talking about,” Cayde chuckled in his usual lighthearted tone, then goes back to his business and we leave him be.
“Ahh, I’ve been waiting for you two, ” Zavala greeted us warmly, with his cool voice and a slight smile, which was kind of unusual.
Troy followed behind me this time, “yes, Cayde said you wanted to speak with us? Is something wrong?” I casually placed a hand on my hip while Troy stood next to me.
“Oh no, quite the opposite actually. I, and the rest of my team, have come to realize that you two stand out from all the rest and are a very exceptional team. It has come to my attention that you two have reached the same level as Ikora, Cayde, and myself, so we have decided to-“
“Woah, wait, I don’t understand,” Troy cut in mid-sentence. “What do you mean we’ve reached the same level as you three? How could just two ordinary guardians like us be as great as you?”
Zavala’s smile grew wider, “that’s just it, you might not be ordinary, for you to have gotten this high so quickly, especially you Kyra. It must be the Traveler’s doing.” He gazes at the giant, broken white ball above the city, pondering, but his gaze returns to us. “But as I was saying before I was interrupted, we have decided to reward you two. For one, you have the top ranking of all the fireteams. Two, these, which no one else has, because no one else can use them, but maybe you can.” He handed each of us a relic, specific to our classes. “Not Ikora, Cayde, nor I could use these, but hopefully they will not go to waste with you two. And last, but not least, you two have received the honor to be part of the council, since you have reached the same rank as us, you no longer need to take orders from us either. Though, you can continue to do as you wish, but you should know there might be times where we will need to call you back here.” Zavala bowed his head to us. ” It is an honor to have you.”
I stared at him for a few seconds before shaking my head in disbelief, my hand had fallen off my hip during his speech and my mouth gaped slightly. “Th-thank you Zavala, it is -was- an honor to serve under you.” I bow my head to him in thanks.
“Thank you very much, sir, I will forever work hard to bring peace to everyone everywhere, with help of course,” He shot a quick glance toward me, then looked back at Zavala, thanking him again.
“Ikora is waiting to speak with you two now,” Zavala turned around to look back over the city. “Safe travels, Guardians.”
Troy and I bowed one more time before heading to Ikora. Once we were out of earshot of the great Titan, I jumped excitedly and squealed.
Troy just stood and watched me, shaking his head, “I can’t believe what just happened…” He sighed heavily and rubbed the back of his neck. “This is a lot of responsibility for two Guardians like us.”
“I don’t care, this is awesome! We’re part of the big leagues now, no one can surpass us!” I pulled out the relic Zavala had given me. “Plus, he gave us these and said no one else could use them.”
“Yeah, and we might not even be able to…”
“Oh, c’mon, Troy, don’t be like that, at least we could try, right? What’s it gonna hurt? Maybe we are special somehow.. I wanna believe that, even if you don’t.” I had paused, but had to pick up the pace to catch up to him again since his stride was so large.
Troy sighed again, “Alright, let’s just go see Ikora.”
“Ikora?” Troy said calmly as we walked up to the Warlock. She smiled at us as she handed another Guardian his bounty and he took off without even a thank you.
“You’re finally here, I’m so glad you could come.” She gave me a quick hug and squeezed Troy’s shoulders. “I take it you’ve already spoken with Zavala, seeing those looks on your faces.” Her brow dropped slightly, “I know it’s a scary thing to take on, but I know you two, of anyone else, can handle it. But let’s get you started, first off, I know if those relics he gave you, you don’t need to do anything with them except take them as close to the Traveler. It will be slightly difficult, but I’m sure you two will manage.”
I shook her hand and thanked her for everything, then we left to finish our business at the Tower. I had quite a lot of running around to do and when I finished I collapsed in the main entrance.
“Ugh… I’m so tired… this place is too big,” my complaints were muffled by the cement, my bright red hair flowed onto the ground.
Troy stood over me, stretching and glancing around to make sure no one else had noticed me. Soon, he just sat down, facing away from me. “Do you gotta be like this right now?”
“Because I am tired of moving.” I sighed heavily.
“But people are starting to stare,” he shifted, uncomfortably.
“I don’t care.”
He sighed this time, “Kyra.”
“Don’t be like this, we should get going before it gets dark.” He stood and stretched again.
Groaning, I heaved myself up into a sitting position, my cloak tangled all around me and my hair messier than usual. “Do I have to?”
“You’re the one who wanted to figure out what these relics are, so yes, you do. Now let’s go.”
I lifted myself to my feet reluctantly and soon we had left the Tower, headed for the EDZ to get to the Shard of the Traveler.
Finally, we arrived at Throstland…….
