I was finally in the airport, out of the plane. I walked with my luggage and after a few minutes exited the airport. It was very chilly here in Yukon, Canada. I was surprised by the space outside the airport. It’s surprisingly small. There were barely any buildings or shops in sight, but a lot of people. And in the middle of all the old looking sights, was my cousin, who stood out the crowd with her formal looks. “Hi Ava!” My cousin, Vera Faye screamed. “Hi.” I replied, forcing a smile. I wish I could’ve stayed in Arizona. But I guess coming here is a way of making me happy and comfortable after what happened to my family. I walked towards Vera and stood about 5 feet away from her. I settled the suitcases and put my gloves on properly since they got a little loose. “Welcome to Snag, Yukon!” She said, joyfully. I nodded ‘yes’ at her and she was still smiling and stood still with her hands folded in front of her. I already had a feeling that it would be hard here. One reason was because the weather here was different from Arizona in Washington. And another reason is because 0I don’t know anyone here except my dear cousin. I guess I could make friends, but even I know that I’m not good at that. “Come on, Ava! Aren’t you even a little happy to see me?” “Of course I am, Vera.” I walked towards Vera and she opened her arms. I hugged her and she started swinging from left to right. Although, I guess I forgot how tight her grip was. She let go of me and then jumped in excitement. “Yay! I am so happy that you’re finally here! I’ve been waiting for this moment to come for a week.” “Me too. It’s great that we can spend time together again like how we used to when we were little.” She sighed in sadness and stood still. “I still wish we hadn’t moved here. I mean, it’s great. But I missed you. And now you’re finally here!” “I missed you too, Vera.” Vera was always happy. Her soft soprano-like voice always made me happy. “Wow, Vera. You got taller.” She gasped. “And so did you! You were taller than me, remember?” “Mhm. I do remember.” When we were young, I used to be the tall one. But she was always 1 month older. The last time we met, which was on my 13th birthday party in Arizona, she was 5 feet 1 inch and I was 5 feet 3 inches. “What is your height now, Ava? I am guessing maybe…5 feet…4 inches?” “Close! But not exact. I am 5 feet 5 inches. I’m guessing you are about…5 feet…8 inches?” “Oh! So close! I’m actually 5 feet 7 inches.” “Wow.” I started feeling a little comfortable already. I am happy that at least I have Vera here by my side. It was getting kind of foggy now. “Where is the driver? Ugh!” She whined, playfully. “It’s okay, Vera. Let’s wait a little longer.” A few seconds later, a black Mercedes parallel parked in front of us. “Finally!” Vera said, relieved. The driver seat door opened and the driver came out. He stood in front of Vera with his hands formally behind his back. “I am terribly sorry I am late.” The young man said in a kind but somewhat orotund voice. “Someone thought I was their driver on the other side of the airport.” I was so confused. “Wait, if you just came, how did Vera get here?” Vera lightly chuckled and replied, “He had to drop me on the other side and then park the car because they don’t allow people to park the car for more than 5 minutes on this side.” Oh. Now it made sense. “Oh, okay.” I noticed the driver’s suit. He was wearing a tuxedo with a black cap and a golden badge that said ‘U.A’ in a large black font. “Nice suit. Very formal.” “Yet comfortable.” He added. “This is a requirement. That’s how I got mistaken for someone else. A lot of people just look at the suit and the car and assume it’s their driver. As every driver from our academy uses identical cars and a determined suit.” “Oh, I see.” I said. The driver looked at the luggage and asked, “Do you need help with that, Ms. Faye?” “No, It’s okay. Thank you Lucas.” Vera replied. “Very well then. I shall wait in the car.” He smiled, then turned around and went to sit in the car. “Wow. I guess your academy owns a lot of fancy stuff.” “Our academy.” She added. I smiled, and started shivering a bit. “I’ll put your luggage in the car. You can go and sit inside, before you become Olaf.” We both laughed and then I sat in the car while she was putting the last suitcase in. She closed the trunk, sat in the car on the other side, and said “Let’s go.” The driver nodded and the car started moving. I looked at Vera. “I noticed that your hair changed. I love it.” “Ya. It feels more like me now.” Vera’s hair was colored auburn from the roots and throughout the rest of the hair, that auburn slowly turned into cherry red. Her style is shoulder-length finger waved hair. Her hair color matched perfectly with her blue eyes, long eyelashes, fair skin, naturally red lips, and her heart-shaped face. I like to see different hair colors and styles on people. I always used to do my mom’s, my sister’s, and my hair whenever we would go to an event or for an occasion. “I love your hair too, Ava. My hair used to be long and extremely wavy. It was also naturally brown. But I loved coloring my hair. That’s why you would always get confused when I would say that I missed my old brown hair. Because 99 percent of the time we would see each other, you saw me in ash blonde. I dyed it ash blonde when I was 9.” “You noticed?” “Mhm, you would be confused like heck.” We both giggled for a minute. “Your hair didn’t really change that much. You still have the usual long wavy chestnut hair with the side swept bangs. You know, the hazel brown eyes, match well.” She waited for an answer. “Thank you. I like the usual.” She smiled. “So do I. You look really pretty in the bangs. They got longer and shinier.” “Ya.” We were quiet for a minute. Then Vera broke the silence. “Nice outfit choice. I like it.” “Thank you.” I was wearing black skin tight pants, a navy blue thin lapel trench dress coat, a red cashmere loop n through scarf, a gray beanie, red shot-bow leather gloves and above knee black winter boots that are flat-heeled. Although, Vera was wearing a long sleeved black blazer with tight jeans and black Chelsea boots. Vera gasped. “I almost forgot to ask! Did you enjoy your flight?” “Yes, I did.” It was boring to sit in the plane, but in the airport, I was entertained by all the shops and the restaurants. “I love travelling! It’s fun to sit on planes and watch movies. And in the airports, you can explore different shops.” “Ya, that’s true.” Well that’s a thing we have in common. Again, the silence started to creep up. This time, I broke it. “What type of a car is this?” I asked for the sake of having something to talk about, but also because I was genuinely curious. “This is a Mercedes-Benz S-Class. It hasn’t even come out yet, but our academy has it.” Wow, not only fancy and formal, but also futuristic with a deluxe touch. Vera sighed and said, It’s going to take us a while to get there. About one and a half hour. Maybe, two.” “One and a half hour. Maybe two?” ONE AND A HALF HOUR?! MAYBE TWO?! That’s so long. “Ya. Who knows, maybe we’ll get there earlier.” “Ya, I guess.” I am so excited, and nervous at the same time. I just hope I can make friends in this new academy and can have a proper education. I have Vera by my side. So I guess I’ll be fine.
“How much time is left, Vera?” “Just 5 more minutes. Sit tight.” Thank god we had 5 minutes left, I was about to get car sickness. “You’re going to love it here. Don’t worry. I know it might be a little hard being a transfer student, but you will get through it. I am by your side 24/7. okay?” “okay.” I was grateful to have a cousin here. At least I knew someone. I heard Vera clutching a folded white paper in her hand and noticed her nails. They were medium length-ed pointy nails painted acrylic red ruby. They looked stunning on her. I guess red is her color. I also noticed that it was foggy, but soon the fog was fading, and appeared a tall black building. As we got closer, the designs were clear. There were huge doors with golden calligraphic designs on it. There was a triangle dome on the top of the academy that said Utopian Academy. “See it’s right there!” Vera said, thrilled. “Wow!” It was worth a wow. The driver parallel parked in front of the building. Vera rushed out the car and opened the trunk to get my luggage out. I followed her. “I can hold them.” I didn’t want Vera to take my luggage for me, I felt that it was rude. “No, it’s okay. I’ll hold them.” She smiled. “Are you sure, Vera?” “Of course, Ava! Don’t worry about it.” I still felt like it wasn’t nice of me to let her carry my stuff. “Okay, then, let me hold one and you can hold the other one.” “Are you sure, Ava?” “Positive.” She contemplated the purple suitcase for a second and then handed it to me. “Okay, I’ll hold the blue one. But if you need any help, then I will help you, all right?” “Okay.” I probably wont unless there’s a whole load of stairs ahead. Vera closed the trunk and started walking towards the front door while screaming thank you to the driver. “Thank You!” I also screamed. She opened the door, settled the suitcase, and stood in a fancy position. Her back was still, her chin was up, her right hand behind her back and her left hand pointing to the darkness inside the building. “You may go in ma’am.” I giggled and replied, “Thank you Miss. Vera!” I walked inside and it was dark. I could only see a little part of the wall’s designs due to the light coming from outside. “Back at ya!” Vera smiled. We both laughed for a second and she let go of the door and it closed. Everything was pitch black, nothing was in sight. “Vera?” “Yes.” “Why is it so dark?” There was nothing I could see. “Ya, I know, Ava. I am going to open the lights in a fun way!” “Um, okay.” In a fun way? What did that mean? “So, Ms. Ava!” She screamed. “WELCOME TO UTOPIAN ACADEMY!” Right when Vera said academy, there was sudden light and I could finally see the hallway, or well, the corridor. It was deep, like there was a tunnel ahead. I looked up and saw fire torches vertically stuck to the wall on each side, about 1 feet apart. “Wow! That looks…mysterious.” “I know right! It’s cool.” The walls were black with golden designs on it, there was a very long dark red carpet on the floor leading the way. Vera started tracing the designs on the wall with her pointer-finger. “I love this type of golden calligraphy. It’s fascinating.” It really is. “Let’s go!” I followed her. “How long is the walk out of this tunnel?” “Um, I guess about 2 and a half minutes.” “Oh, okay.” That’s long. “I guess people here like mysterious things.” “Oh, you have no idea how mysterious people act here.” We both giggled for a second, then she hopped on the spot in excitement. “See, these are the stairs.” I looked up and saw a spiral of large black stairs. “Wow. They are large.” There were designs on the railing. “It leads straight to the roof. Cool right?” “Ya. Wow. That would be a very long walk.” “Ya, but a lot of people use it here.” Do people like to walk for hours on stairs here? So far, everything sounds unique. We walked further and appeared a room. There were people sitting on tables and chairs horizontally. I thought I saw someone from the corner of my left eye. I looked left and saw a boy walking in the opposite direction. He stopped and started walking towards me. He stood right in front of me, about a few feet away and stared at me. Right there, my breath stopped. I suddenly felt invisible electricity between us. I felt like I could trust him. I felt like I was, somehow, calm with him. My fear of the academy had slipped away in that second. I felt like…I was home. I noticed how his dark brown hair in a long top short sides hairstyle, matched well with his green eyes, fair skin, perfect cheekbones, and an oval shaped face with a strong jawline. His outfit matched well with his aura. He was wearing a dark gray v-neck shirt, a black leather jacket, black leather jeans and black running shoes. “Hey.” He said, in his dark mono-toned voice. “Hi.” I replied. “I’m Alex Delbert. You must be Avaleigh. Sorry. Ava.” How does he know my name? I don’t remember telling him. Maybe Vera told him. I looked at Vera and she looked nervous and frozen, like she was being controlled. I turned to Alex and he had put his hand forward for what seemed like an invitation to a handshake. I was still frozen, trying to find words, as well as my breath. “Um, yes. I’m Avaleigh Faye.” I put my hand in his and we shook hands. Alex looked like he also froze for a second, shocked. I noticed calm starting to creep up in him. His tight posture suddenly looked loose and he looked more in ease. “You have a beautiful name.” He sounded fruity and soft-spoken now. That was nice of him to say. And so did he. “Thank you.” I said, shyly. I don’t know why It’s so hard for me to talk to new people. He smiled and looked at Vera. So did I. Vera suddenly looked like she was about to fall but then held herself with her right foot. She looked like she finally had control over her body again. I saw from the corner of my left eye that Alex nodded and so did Vera. Then he smiled at me. “I’ll talk to you later.” He said, then walked in the opposite direction. I turned around to look at him and he was also looking at me, this time a little angrily. I turned around and Vera was shivering. “Vera?” “Mhm?” Her voice was very piping. “Are you okay?” She stood still, staring at Alex, wide-eyed. Then looked at me. Why were they acting so weird? “Yes! I, uh, I’m good!” “Okay…then.” I could tell she wasn’t fine. I turned around to look at Alex because Vera was still staring at him, shocked. The second I turned around to see him, he turned around and walked in the darkness. “What happened? Why are you so shocked?” “It’s nothing, Ava. Come, let’s go!” She couldn’t just say nothing happened! They had a 5-minute staring contest, which looked less like a contest and more like a stare you would give someone out of fear and hatred. “Are you sure, Vera? That looked dark.” “No, really. It’s nothing.” “Fine.” I wasn’t going to give up that easily. I’ll ask her later. “So, this is where people study or just hang out.” We walked further and entered another room which is the main floor. It was very open and very big. The walls were tall and huge. The breakfast machine was on the right on top of the huge semi circle shaped marble counter. There were two fancy long tables. One on the far left and the other on the far right. The two long tables were golden with black and golden chairs. In the middle of both of those long tables, there were 30 white round tables. “This is what we like to call the ‘food court’. We all eat our meals here, or sometimes just play games. This is more of a room for people who wanna socialize loudly. The one that we saw before is a quiet room.” On my right was the ‘food court’, on my left, there were so huge stairs. The stairs were leading straight up to a floor that was near the main floor. The huge stairs would separate into two, one going left and straight up to the special classes floor. From there the stairs would lead you up to the next 5 floors where the dorms are. The stairs on the right side lead you up to the next floor which was also for special classes. And from there, lead you up to the next 5 floors with dorms. Vera looked up and said, “Look.” She pointed to the roof. I looked up as well. Oh, she was pointing to the huge silver crystal chandelier. The crystals were shiny like diamonds and sharp like knives. “That is a huge chandelier.” “I know right!” Vera ran to the huge stairs with the suitcase. “Come. I’ll take you to our dorm first. Then maybe tomorrow I can give you the tour. Today, we’ll be chill. Good?” As much as I wanted to explore, I was tired and needed time to charge up. That did sound like a good plan. “Yup. It’s good.” I followed her up the huge stairs which were only 7 long steps high. There was a huge room in front of us with the doors open. “This is the gym!” We went up the stairs on the right side. “We call the stairs on the right side ‘Dextral’ and the stairs on the left are called ‘Sinistral’.” Wow, they even have stair names. Vera walked in front of me and suddenly stopped before going on the stairs where the 1st floor of dorms are. “I want to introduce you to the classes on this side. Vera pointed her finger at the first class.“The 1st class is for sociology. The second class is for biology. The third class is called ‘Hypnosis arts’.” What did she just say? “Hypnosis arts?” That was an unusual thing to study. She contemplated me for a minute, dead faced. “Ya, hypnosis arts. Why?” “That’s…unusual to learn about.” “Ya. I know. But it’s fun! I take it.” “Oh. That must be exciting.” I do wonder what they teach in that class. Though, I am not that interested in the education since I have a goal linked with robots and other types of technology. “This one is for psychology. The 4th one is for anatomy and physiology. The 5th class is for Computer science and technology.” Yes! They have computer science and technology! Which they should, but, there are schools here that don’t have it based on my research. “And the final class here, is for engineering science.” Things are really starting to get better. “Are you planning on joining any of these classes. There are more though.” I looked at the last class and replied, “I am actually interested interested in joining computer science and technology and engineering science.” Vera raised her eyebrows and asked, “Career linked with technology?” “Mhm. Robots. I want to become a robotics engineer.” “That’s cool!” I smiled and we continued up the stairs. When we reached the 5th floor, Vera walked down the hallway until the last dorm which had huge stairs diagonal from it, leading straight down to the ground floor. “This last dorm is ours, Ava!” “Oh, ok.” Vera searched for the key in her blazer, then looked at me like she remembered something. “Oh ya! My dad has the keys. You can wait here. I’ll go get them.” “Is it ok if I can come?” I would get to see more of the school. “Umm, how about you stay here. I don’t want you to get lost in the crowds. The way that I am going, the hallways are pretty crowded that you might not be able to catch up.” Maybe she was right. “Ok.” “Seriously!” She laughed. “I fell once!” Wow. There must be a lot of people here. “Hope you weren’t injured.” “Luckily, I was fine. Now, I better go quick. See ya!” She screamed. “Alright, See ya!” I shouted to her. Vera gently skipped down the stairs and disappeared from sight.
