I don’t really seem to fit in with people my age.
They all seem to like me, but I can’t really seem to understand them. I just pretend that I do so I don’t hurt them.
They all seem to think that I’m the life of the party, but I can’t help but feel like there’s something missing. It almost feels as though I’m constantly forgetting something.
Isn’t that weird?
I don’t even know why I’m telling you this, I don’t know who you are and you don’t know who I am. I guess I could tell you my name…
I was given the name Mei Kinsley when I was born.
The Japanese name Mei means “bud, sprout” with the combination of either “rely on” or “life”. My parents said that they chose the name because of its meaning. They told me that they were told that I was going to be a stillbirth, which means I would have died in the womb and be born that way, but I didn’t.
I had life when I was born so they thought that it was fitting to name me with a name that basically means life.
“Mei? Are you ready to go?” my mother called sweetly from outside my door. “It’s time for school.”
“Coming, mother,” I replied, grabbing my bag and leaving my room.
Something feels kind of off.
Did I forget something at home? No, that’s not it.
“Hey, Mei.” someone from school greeted, stopping my internal rant and checklist.
I’ll just figure it out later.
“Hello,” I replied. “How are you doing?”
What is their name again?
“As good as I can be, seeing as we’re stuck at school.” they sighed.
“Yeah, that is a setback.” I giggled.
I really can’t remember their name.
“You like school, don’t you?” they asked, looking at me with confusion in their eyes.
“Nope!” I chirped. “If I had liked school that I wouldn’t have made that remark, now would I?”
Seriously, what is their name?
“No, I guess not.” they sighed.
“Hey, Charles! come on, let’s go! We’re going to be late to class!” some other guy called. “You can continue to flirt with her later, now let’s go!”
That’s his name! Charles!
Wait… that was flirting? Was he flirting with me? Or is his friend just teasing him?
“I’m coming!” Charles called back. “I’ll see you later, right?”
Charles turned around and caught up with his friend.
“Sure, I guess,”I mumbled, heading to class.
There’s chatter going around the classroom.
The teacher gave us the class off so we can study for our midterms, but mostly everyone is just talking amongst themselves and gossiping.
I decided to take a break from studying and listen to my friend’s conversation.
“I heard that there’s going to be a new student coming in a few days,” Lily said.
Lily is normally very logical about things but loves to stay up to date on things. Her father is the principle of our school so she has to work even harder in her classes to prove herself. She’s placed third in the ranks, I’m placed first and someone else is in second, I can never remember their name though. Lily has fair skin, dark chocolate colored hair with light curls and milk chocolate eyes which are framed with dark red glasses.
“What do you think they’re going to be like?” Ruby wondered, propping her head up on her hand and sighing softly.
Ruby is the dreamer of the group. She dreams of finding love and wants Lily and I to do the same. She’s constantly trying to get Lily and I to date someone, but so far have been unsuccessful. She has porcelain skin, straight red hair, and candy apple eyes. She’s just like a human-sized doll.
“My father said that he’s like Mei,” Lily replied. “A child prodigy, a young genius, or whatever you want to call it. But anyways, he also skipped about three years ahead just like Mei.”
I was given the option to skip a few grades and I took it.i could have skipped more than three years, if I wanted to.
“Too smart for their age group?” I suggested, shrugging.
“Ooh,” Ruby exclaimed quietly. “He would be absolutely perfect for Mei! Don’t you think so, Lily?”
“Whatever, miss matchmaker.” Lily retorted. “We should probably start studying for our midterms, though.”
“Yes, ma’am.” Ruby giggled, mock saluting her.
