Have you ever wondered what The Future is like? Well, just to let you know, it’s definitely not like how movies and books say. The future is way more unpredictable and dangerous. We all live in troops that have their own territories. Troops are always trying to conquer other territories. But there is one territory that none of the troops would ever want, mine. That area is called the Danger Zone. And we are the only ones that have survived… barely.
My name is Richards. Kayla Richards. The year is 2126. I was born in The Fields in the year 2108. Raised in the Zone. Our troop is called The Raiders. We Raiders are fighters and survivors. At least that’s what we’ve been told all these years. We moved locations in 2111 when The Jade tribe invaded The Fields. There was no other option, so we were forced to move to The Zone. The transition was hard. We lost many Raiders to the fatal obstacles here in The Zone. Barely any survived, but soon many more came.
Soon it became too many. The troop leaders had to start picking 3 children every season to leave to die. If you are in the council, then none of your family members will be left to die. My father was in the council until this season. Now, I am in danger of being left.
“Kayla, it’s your shift to go hunting. You have an hour until the gathering.”
That was my mother. Well, at least I call her my mother. My biological mother didn’t survive the relocation, so my father remarried. It is a shame in the future if you are single. You are expected to be in a relationship by age 18. Which means that most parents make arranged marriages between the families.
I have been told that I will be marrying the most stuck up boy in the troop. His name is Jacob. His parents and mine are very close, and they thought that it would be a great way to make their bond better. I would rather not marry anyone. I don’t need a man to take care of me. I am an independent, self-sufficient woman.
I get my cloak on, grab my bow and arrow, and go outside. Over the years, I have become what I like to think the stealthiest Raider in the troop. The only other person that is stealthier than I is-
“Oof! Tom, I thought I told you to stop sneaking up on me while I’m hunting!”
“Sorry, Kay Kay. I just got so carried away. You know I can’t help it!”
Tom is my childhood friend. I think of him as my brother I’ve never had. He also lost his mother in the transition, so that’s how we found something in common. He is a year older than me and is one of the regular hunters in the troop. He has been practicing his stealth, lately.
“You want me to help you with your shift?” he asked.
“Don’t you remember the rules? We’re not allowed to catch food for one another unless we are in a relationship. And we are both arranged to marry other people” I pointed out.
“I know, but I’m okay with bending the rules to help out a friend.” he said, “Also, never remind me that I have to marry Julia. I’m still getting over the fact that I will have to spend every day with her attitude.
Julia is Jacob’s little sister. She is the most beautiful girl I’ve ever seen, but only on the outside. Her personality resembles a rotten egg times 10. Tom and I have said that we would much rather marry each other, even though that would be weird.
“Okay, you can help me, but just this once,” I responded reluctantly. “But we need to catch it fast. I need to be home in 20 minutes.”
“Say no more, madam,” he said gallantly with a fake bow.
Tom went off into the forest. I found a comfortable tree stump to sit on. I was watching a bird feed a worm to its young when I heard a rustling noise coming from the bushes. I slowly crept forward with my arrow drawn. Suddenly, a shadow busted out of the bushes, grabbed me and held me against a tree. I felt a strong hand clamp down over my mouth.
