Chapter 1

Anywhere But North

The Tenth Cavalry, made up of black soldiers, fought supporters of Venustiano Carranza at Carrizal, Chihuahua, on June 21, 1916. Carranza, Pancho Villa’s enemy, ordered the Army to shoot any soldier going in any direction except north. Forty-eight were killed and 24 taken prisoner.
