Apartment 13D

One: A Chance Encounter

Their story began unremarkably. Like most of us, a dozen unremarkable incidents occur in order to bring two people together. Once Olivia and Veronica had been brought together, they managed to change the worlds.

Their story begins in a dark, dank apartment. An old, worn out, place – obviously musty and decades past its prime. Two young women were neighbors. Both beautiful, both living alone, and both simply living their lives. Veronica, the blonde living in the corner end apartment kept receiving her mail delivered directly to her door. It was such an odd occurrence, but benign, She couldn’t understand who or why someone was doing this, but she was happy to ignore this new daily delivery. One day, Veronica was getting ready to leave for the day when she almost bumped into a man in his 50’s standing outside her door. Surprised, he asked “where’s the guy who lives in this apartment?” She didn’t know who he could possibly be talking about, made her apologies and hurried him on his way. You could see he was genuinely perplexed as he drove away. While outside on her apartment’s walkway balcony, Olivia, the neighbor three doors down popped outside. They greeted each other and over the next several weeks became fast friends. They did everything together, shopping, dinner, and movies. They each had a distinctive wardrobe. Veronica wearing only black, and Olivia wearing only white. Their friendship blossomed into a romantic relationship, and they wildly and quickly fell in love.

One evening as the couple sat in Veronica’s apartment, a man with unkempt red hair and matching beard burst through the door. The women were startled, but Veronica, with a sense of dread, recognized the man instantly. She tried to explain to Olivia how she knew this man, but Olivia sensing half-truths became enraged. Veronica blushed knowing she wasn’t going to be able to explain, let alone be given the time to explain the situation. Olivia burst out of the apartment and never returned. Veronica turns to the disheveled man with narrow and cold eyes then asked, “What. Are. You. Doing. Here, Fen?” The question was direct, throaty, fierce. Fen winced as if in pain at the force of her question and said “I didn’t have anywhere to go. I needed a place to sleep, eat, shower. It’s been impossible. You were right about everything V.” As Veronica turned on her heels she stated in a low, but unmistakably clear voice, “You understood the rules. You understood the delicacy of this situation. You chose to ignore everything happening around us. You chose this.” Without warning, V walked over to a table grabbing a set of keys tossing them to a visibly nervous Fen. “Do not return to this apartment again. If you do, you’ll know what it means to screw up one too many times.” As Fen fumbled with the keys, V pointed at him and said “bottom floor, door 4D. That’s where you stay now. I’ll come speak to you when I’m done.” As Fen walked to the door exhausted, shoulders slumped, he reached for the knob. Without turning to face Victoria’s wrath he said “I’m sorry for what I’ve done. It will never happen again – you have my word.” And with this final phrase he left her apartment.
