Born of the Mind

The Nightmare

I’m running. From what exactly, I am unsure, all I can think is faster, go faster. But when my legs don’t cooperate, and my lungs feel as though they will burst at any moment, I collapse to the ground. It is hard, and cold as ice. I look around and see nothing but a vast expanse of white. Shivering, I steady myself enough to get back on my feet. I walk, stumbling every few feet, until I come across a hut. It is rather small and appears to be made of the same material as everything else around me, ice-like, but not quite ice.

Suddenly, a horrible scream shatters the dead silence. I realize it is coming from the hut.

Dread spikes in my chest as a voice cries out in my mind, Help me, Elle! Make them stop!

“Clarence!” I scream as I frantically search the hut for any point of entry, finding none.

I continue to scream his name as

I pound my fists on the walls, willing them, begging them to give way. But they

stay as firmly in place as before.

As I continue my fruitless

pounding, a menacing voice stops me in my tracks, “It’s a shame we had to kill

him, he would have made a valuable addition to our coven,”

I whirl in surprise, but see no one, only the endless sea of white.

“But of course, you know what we really want,” The voice says.

All at once, I feel a hand on my shoulder, even colder than the freezing ground beneath my feet. I shudder.

“You are ours now Elizabeth…” The voice breathes in my ear.

I want to run, but I cannot move my feet from the ground, I can’t even feel them, they are so cold. Soon, the iciness spreads, up my legs, around my waist. I am freezing. It crawls up my arms and is soon at my neck. I can’t move and all I can think is cold. I manage to scream my brother’s name one last time, before the ice takes over, and everything disappears.

I awake with a jolt, covered in sweat. Gripping the edges of the mattress, I concentrate on slowing my rapid gasps. What a nightmare.

“My dear! Are you alright?” A woman questions as she rushes through the door.

“Just a nightmare,” I say between gasps, “How long have I been asleep?”

“Almost thirteen hours, how are your wounds?” She answers.

“Better,” I say. I had forgotten all about them in the aftermath of my dream.

“Good, I’d say about two more days of rest and you should be good to go,” The woman informs me.

I lay my head back on my pillow. Two days seems like an impossibly long time, “I’m fine, really, in fact I think I am ready to go now,”

The woman looks at me skeptically, “I don’t think that’s a good idea,”

I ignore her comment as I pull myself out of bed. My legs are incredibly stiff, and I nearly topple over trying to stand.

The woman rushes over to help me.

“I’m fine,” I repeat as I hobble over to the doorway.

“At least let me tend to your wounds one more time before you leave miss!”

“Alright,” I grumble as I stumble back over to the bed.

“I promise,” The woman starts,

“We’ll have you out of here soon, just relax,”

Soon. I think to myself. But as I lay there, I realize soon is not nearly soon enough. I take a deep breath, I’ll be out before I know it, and when I am, I’m going to find Clarence.
