A Player’s Guide to Otherworld

New York Times bestselling authors Jason Segel and Kirsten Miller invite you to Otherworld, where you can leave your body behind and step into the future. Sounds pretty awesome, right?

Well, this sci-fi thriller isn’t just about a virtual reality game where you can indulge your deepest desires. That would be boring. Otherworld is so addictive, you’ll never want it to end. Until you realize that you’re the one being played.

To get you in the mood for a little avatar action, first watch the trailer:

Now that you’re excited (and maybe a little scared), are you ready to play?

Here’s what you need to know. In Otherworld, there are three realms and many surrounding lands where you can play. We use the word play lightly here.

Which realm seems most enticing to you?

Nastrond

Savor the thrill of the kill

Description: Lush, dense jungle

Terrain: A rain forest with leaves so large that they block the sun. “This is exactly the kind of environment that you’d expect to host dinosaurs. I wouldn’t be shocked to encounter a Velociraptor here, but I have a hunch that the dangers in this world are human in nature.”

Beware of: Beasts, other players

Weapons: Darts, guns, swords, your own two hands—literally anything you can find. This place is no joke.

Survival tip: There is nowhere to hide, so you better know how to run.

Think you can handle the hunt?

Imra

Resort of the future

Description: A clean, futuristic city where there are no laws or rules. This is the most popular Otherworld destination and where most adventures begin.

Terrain: Volcanoes, terrifying lava churning below the city, and lots of marble. “It’s probably what Monte Carlo would look like if ancient Greeks had constructed it.”

Beware of: Overindulgence

Weapons: Willpower

Survival tip: Don’t eat the delicious food, or lay on the incredibly comfy lounge chairs, or . . . well, you’re never going to want to leave.

Looking for relaxation beyond your wildest dreams?

Mammon

Seek your Fortune

Description: A sparkling city with a long road of perfectly manicured lawns and ornate mansions, all leading to a temple. “The place is actually glittering, as though its walls are spackled with precious stones. At its center, a golden temple rises far above the other structures. I see no sign of humans anywhere.”

Terrain: Canyon walls surround a narrow meadow full of fruit trees and animals. If you can make it through the canyon and into Mammon, everything changes.

Beware of: Booby traps, thieves, greedy neighbors

Weapons: Whatever you can find and hoard

Survival tip: Find plenty of diamonds and gems to pay your way.

Do you think you deserve to claim the riches of the golden temple?

Think you’re ready to enter Otherworld? Warning: this is not a game.
