I’ve given up trying to find an agent to assist me in publishing my first book. If I just wanted to go at it alone, what is the best way to begin the process? I have completed the novel but of course need a good editor to assist me in proofreading, making corrections to the manuscript, and polishing it up so that it’s ready to print. Who would you guys recommend that can do this sort of work and won’t break my wallet as a new author?

Honestly, It’s pretty easy to self-publish through Kindle Direct Publishing (AKA Amazon). It’s free to use, and you can download templates that make formatting your book super easy. Just copy, paste, and edit to your liking. I can tell a lot of people here like Grammarly, but I prefer Hemingway App wayyyyyyyy more. It’s 100% free and it’s on your browser. Just copy and paste your document and it highlights all the “problems” with your document and gives you suggestions on how to fix them. ZERO subscription fees, same results.

I also use Grammarly, which really helps a lot but make sure don’t rely too much on Grammarly as it can change the meanings of sentences and length of paras.

Thanks for the reply. I haven’t tried Grammarly yet so I will give it a shot. Like yourself, each time I read my manuscript I find something I missed. Have you tried using an editor for the final draft before you print or do you just use Grammarly and then go to print?

I think self-publishing is a good option. I like it. I did everything myself — editing, proofreading, polishing, formatting, cover, front matter. It was a chore but I got through it. I re-read each of my books dozens of times, and always found typos. Of course, I ran them through Grammarly a few times. I paid a guy to draw my character, and I was disappointed with what I got. So from then on, I did it all myself. And I’m happy.

I think trying to find an agent is like trying to find the right lottery numbers.
