Our Wicked Gifts is a deliciously dark fantasy thriller with a side of romance. We talked with author Kathryn Foxfield, to learn more about her, the inspiration behind her dark romantasy, and which of her characters she’d want to be stranded on a deserted island with.
What was the first thriller you ever read?
It would have been one of the Point Horror books released in the 1990s. Trick or Treat by Richie Tankersley has always stuck with me.
What book are you loving right now?
Paint Me Like Your Dead Girls by Cynthia Murphy.
What is the inspiration behind Our Wicked Gifts, and why did you decide to mix thriller with fantasy?
After watching the TV series Succession, I came up with an idea that combined family drama with magic and murder. Fantasy is my favorite genre because of the sense of wonder, like you’re opening a door into another world. Anything can happen.
What is one thing you learned writing your first fantasy?
Magic always has to come with a cost. Characters paying a terrible price to get what they want makes for a suspenseful story.
What is your favorite romance trope?
Definitely enemies to lovers!
Which character in Our Wicked Gifts would you want to be stranded on an island with?
Um, none of them? At a push, Soren.

“If I’m going to be blinded by cheese, let it be Basajo. It’s seeped in wine.” —Felix Winter
If you could have one power as a Winter, what would it be and why?
The power of infinite knowledge.

Can we expect to get more from the Winters after book one?
I hope so. They’re too terrible to be confined to one book.
