What was the first romance novel you read?

I picked up Loves Me, Loves Me Not by Anilú Bernardo from a used bookstore when I was fourteen and fell head over heels in love with romance books. I reread those kissing scenes so many times that my copy now easily falls open to them!

What romance are you currently reading?

I’m a huge Nina Kenwood fan and recently finished her adult debut The Wedding Forecast. I’m now halfway through her sophomore YA book, Unnecessary Drama.

What are your favorite tropes?

I’m a sucker for enemies-to-lovers. I also really like forbidden romance à la Romeo & Juliet, where the two people really shouldn’t be together and that makes it all the more tempting and exciting.

Who’s your book crush?

My book crush at the moment is Wyatt from Annabel Monaghan’s Same Time Next Summer. His nickname for the main character, Sam, makes my knees weak.

What inspires your writing?

I mostly write from a reader’s perspective—what’s the kind of story I would enjoy reading? A few years ago I came across the headline “Team USA and Team Canada Women’s Hockey Players Keep Marrying Each Other” and knew I wanted to read a book about rival sports players secretly getting together. This was the kernel that turned into All’s Fair in Love and Field Hockey.

What’s your favorite part of writing romance?

I love writing dialogue in general, and I adore writing funny or witty banter. My favorite thing to write are scenes filled with tension between the two love interests, especially when the characters are still in denial about their feelings and growing attraction for each other.

“Let your arms go looser. Bend your elbows,” she says gently.

She opens my palms and twists me so my wrists are facing her. As she shifts me around like a doll, I forget how to breathe, let alone move on my own.

She nods. “That’s much better.”

I stare at her, still frozen. She meets my gaze and holds it. The electricity buzzing on my skin crackles and grows until there’s a force field between us.

“Okay,” she says, stilted. “We’re even.”

She turns and runs back into the library.

All's Fair in Love and Field Hockey

A high school field hockey star must choose between her love of the game and her new, distractingly beautiful rival in this queer YA romance perfect for fans of She Drives Me Crazy and Cleat Cute!

“A masterclass in romantic tension.”—Becky Albertalli, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda

Evelyn was raised to see field hockey as war.

Before she could write her own name, her family’s legacy on the field was already spelled out. Every step Evelyn takes toward glory is within a footprint her mother left behind. And no step matters more than this next one, with Evelyn about to lead her varsity team into their final battle season. Evelyn is beyond ready to score the Nationals title and win the critical scholarship to her mom’s alma mater that comes with it.

This year, she’s out for blood, and nothing can stand in her way . . .

. . . except for Rosa Alvarez, the highly talented new recruit on her biggest rival’s team.

After a humiliating homecoming game and follow-up prank leave the two enemies in a stalemate, they grudgingly strike a deal to help each other overcome their weaknesses on the field. But the more time Evelyn spends with Rosa, the more she finds herself casting her hardened armor aside, until she begins to wonder what life might be like if she left the battlefield behind and fought for love instead.

“This one’s definitely a keeper!”—Jennifer Dugan, bestselling author of Some Girls Do
